MC producing power from waste

The garbage processing plant has been creating a lot of news lately, because of the gridlock between the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and the Jay Pee Group. Now the Municipal Corporation has thought of a very good use of the same ad they are now planning to use the solid waste at the plant for generating power.

Jaypee Group is also currently using the solid waste to create refuse-derived fuel and offer it further to the power and cement plants in the area and other nearby places. The process has been kick-started by the Municipal Corporation and they have already made a nine-member team and their aim is to have various companies who would readily come forward to generate power by utilizing the solid waste.

The energy, which will be produced using this power plant, will further be sold to different power companies. Another positive aspect of this would be that the energy that is being produced here will be giving out non-hazardous byproducts, which will be a result of the combustion process. The whole trash will consist of not more than 10 percent of ashes, whereas the rest of it can then further be used in construction of roads, and even at brick-kilns. The Municipal Corporation has to now finalize on the company that will be producing power through this plant and will further sell out to other companies. The rate at which power would be sold to other companies will be around Rs. 7.90 per unit.

Last year, the municipal corporation had refused to give out tipping charges to the Jaypee Group, for their efforts of producing power from the garbage; therefore they had planned to shut down the process soon. But now things are back on track and power will be produced through the same.

Also, the municipal corporation has many more plans of introducing new technologies, with the help of which, dumping of garbage wouldn’t be required in that area and the corporation can then use this dumping ground for various other useful purposes.

Punjab – The Best Power Producing State

The Power Corporation has recently obtained an A+ for the immense improvement in the power supply sector and it has emerged as a good power producer in comparison to other states around the country.

Bikram Singh Majithia, the Cabinet Minister of Punjab stated the above while addressing the audience at the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of 66KV grid at Jalalpura Village. The grid will be constructed in the district at a cost of Rs. 3.62 crore.

The reason behind the state emerging as the best power producing state in the country is the installation of Thermal plants at a cost of Rs. 33, 000 and also an investment, which was made for Rs. 4, 400 crore for the improvement of the power distribution system. Not only being beneficial in the power segment, these efforts have also helped in increasing the number of employment opportunities in this industry. With this development, around 6, 000 people got employment in this sector.

Along with being the best power producing state, Punjab has also excelled in the field of renewable energy and had even received an award from the Prime Minister of India for being the best performing state in the country for the same. The production of renewable energy was increased to 1500 MW from 9 MW, with an investment of Rs. 1, 200 crore in the power sector. And talking about employment, this segment of the industry have employed around 10, 000 people.

With such increase of power supply and energy, the number of issues and complaints amidst the customer also increase, and to solve the same, a toll-free number has been started by the authorities, for solving the issues of the customers at the earliest possible. This number is 1912.

Grids have been set up in different parts of the state, from Wadala, NaagKalan, to Dhadde, Mattewal and more… also grids in various districts have been upgraded for better supply of power. Around Rs. 50 crore has been spent on the same.

In addition to this, a lot of efforts have been made to improve power distribution in the Majitha constituency and an amount of Rs. 17 crore, was spent for the same.

Bureau of Investment promotion - One office for 23 Departments

The model of 'Invest Punjab' department, which is a "Single point of contact" for new investors had garnered a huge response from all over the country. This unique model is applauded by every individual and the Punjab government is happy with the response that they are getting.

This model has become an ideal model and a major step towards developing the business and functioning of the state. This model is one of its kinds in the country wherein 23 departments' power have been transferred to one man. It is an example the government of India should follow.

When investors come to India, they should not go to 100 departments of government of India. Instead there should be a single point of contact so that the process of investment becomes easy for them.  There should be one Invest India in Prime Minister's office under Prime Minister. Anybody who walks in there should be one number, one man, one email and one month clearance for those who wants to invest in India that will be the game changer.

The Punjab government has put in place a Punjab Bureau of Investment Promotion (Bureau), which is the single point of contact for regulatory clearances and fiscal incentives approvals to facilitate investors who are looking to set up a business in the state.

This bureau is empowered to provide necessary clearance of departments including pollution, labour, industry, forest, electricity department and fiscal incentive approvals to facilitate new investment in the state.

An IAS officer has been made as CEO of Punjab Bureau of Investment Promotion. This model has become a talking point because it has given new dimensions to the whole process of investment. This model will act as a catalyst for the investors. This is a step ahead to make Punjab progressive on the business front.

Fish Farming gets a Boost in Punjab

Fish farming is looking up in the state of Punjab, where it is mainly being taken up by the farming community as allied activity for diversification. It is done on land used for agriculture land in low lying areas and in village ponds.

The Punjab government has been working for the fish farmers and had last year come up with the free insurance scheme which covers all fish farmers through Fishcofed. It came as a welcome decision for 8000 fish farmers in the state.

Keeping their interest in mind the government has recently come up with another project as per which they would train fish farmers for preparing fish products.

In the said project scientists from Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Science University for training farmers in preparing food items from raw fish. The government has also announced a grant of Rs 5.86 crore which would be put to use for renovation of Punjab’s biggest fish-breeding farm at Fatehgarh Sahib.

Under the free insurance scheme the premium is being paid by the government. Last year the government covered over 3000 fish farmers in 14 districts of Punjab, including Ludhiana, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ferozepur, Patiala, Roopnagar, Amritsar, Moga, Hoshiarpur, Sangrur, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Faridkot and Bathinda.

As per the free insurance policy, a relief of Rs 10,000 is given for fish farmers towards their hospitalization and the Punjab government is contributing 50 percent towards its premium as the government offers 50 percent subsidy for all its districts.

There is a special attraction for those having 1 acre land being used for fish farming they get Rs 60,000 for digging as per the decision and also 20,000 for feed purposes and 18,000 for purchase of aerator.

As per this special insurance scheme the family of a fish farmer is compensated with Rs 2 lakh compensation in case of death while Rs 1 lakh is given in case of permanent handicap. The scheme provides for Rs 10,000 in case a fish farmer is hospitalized. The Punjab government is contributing 50 percent of the premium.

The biggest fish breeding farm which has not been renovated since 1990 when it was built as per Kesar Singh Kheri, Assistant Director, Fisheries, Fatehgarh Sahib and it will take two months for renovation work to be completed.

In the state of Punjab fish is consumed mainly by migrants and the government has decided to come up with an ornamental fish unit at a cost of Rs 13.5 lakh, which will be another unique venture to encourage the fish farming community.

As per estimates, about 4000 to 6000 fish can be kept in a one acre pond and 25 quintals fish can be produced per acre in a year. This can help in earning Rs 65,000 profit about Rs 1 lakh as selling price for fish is Rs 100 per kg in wholesale market.
